Nature Is Our Refuge

A Reflective Art Workshop for
DC Climate Week

Welcome! I’m Creative Kate - artist, designer and fun-maker.

Below is the explainer video for this drop-in workshop.

Sign up for an ongoing virtual group.

Workshop Instructions:

1.Be Present

Take a moment to let go:

  • Breathe - Take three deep breaths.

  • Feel Grounded - Notice how your feet meet the ground.

  • Notice - Examine an organic object on the table for a few minutes. Notice the texture, temp, patterns. Let it teach you something.

2. Grief and Letting Go

Choose a way to let go:

  • Dissolve It - What do you need to surrender? Write a word or phrase on dissolving paper and place in the water.

  • Offer a Stone - Hold a stone in your hand. Name your grief silently. Place the stone in or near the water to let go.

3. Map Your Refuge

Choose a way (or two) to reflect:

  • Freeform Journaling - What, who, and where is nearby supporting you in this space? What real or imagined space do you envision around you? At the end, write a few 6 word stories to summarize.

  • Map Your Place of Refuge - Consider a real or imaginary place that gives you refuge. From an aerial perspective, draw circles all over your page and then fill them with people, ideas, natural elements, curiosities, beliefs, and ways of caring for yourself and your community to lean into safety, rest, or regeneration.

4. Share with a neighbor

Remember that you are not alone, and giving and receiving your story is an important part of the journey.

Ongoing virtual connection…

Creative Kate is offering free ongoing space for virtual connection around art and further processing around this collective moment of disruption. Let’s continue to claim nature as our refuge.
